The Move of the Week is Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Saturday in Golden Gate Park: free, six stages across Hellman Hollow and Marx and Lindley Meadows, gates at 9 AM, music until 7. Four sources agree on the dates, gates and stages: SFMTA's travel advisory, KQED, ABC7 and Funcheap. The festival runs Friday through Sunday (Friday's gates open at 11). We built Saturday because it has the full 9-to-7 day; sunset that evening is 6:51 PM, from the published October table this time rather than our own arithmetic. Two plays follow it. Sunday the 4th is the 52nd Castro Street Fair, then Octo Octa at the Castro Theatre a block away, doors at 5:30. Saturday the 10th is Fleet Week: the air show over Marina Green from noon to 4, then dinner in North Beach. Now the work you cannot see. Mavis Staples, Los Lobos and My Morning Jacket are all on the Hardly Strictly bill, but we are not saying which day anyone plays, because we did not check the official day-by-day schedule. One outlet reported a change to the lineup that we could not confirm a second time, so we are leaving it out. We also held three items. A Fleet Week brass concert on Patricia's Green and a padel-court opening party in Dogpatch each had a single source. A Bollywood garba in Union Square on the 10th has two sources, but it comes from the organizer we covered in Union Square two weeks ago, and our eight-week rule covers that. The Noe Valley Night Market and Valencia LIVE are on the same rule. We checked Equal Parts' Saturday hours before building a dinner around it: the dinner menu runs 4 to 9:30. One thing worth knowing about Fleet Week: the Blue Angels missed 2025, when the federal shutdown grounded them, and this year's published schedule has them back. Saturday the 3rd: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in Golden Gate Park, free, then dinner on Balboa

  1. 11:00 AM Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, enter at Fulton St and 30th Ave — Saturday Oct 3. Gates open at 9 AM Saturday and Sunday, and at 11 AM on Friday. Music ends at 7 PM every day. It is free, with six stages across Hellman Hollow and Marx and Lindley Meadows. Fulton and 30th Ave is one of the published entrances, and JFK Drive at Transverse is another. We link KQED's guide because it has the maps, parking and bag policy on one page. Read the bag policy before you pack a blanket and food. Arriving two hours after gates open means the meadows will already be filling, so agree on a meeting point at the entrance, not 'by the stage.'
  2. 11:00 AM–6:45 PM Six stages: Banjo, Swan, Towers of Gold, Rooster, Arrow and Horseshoe Hill — The lineup has 71 sets over three days. Mavis Staples, Los Lobos and My Morning Jacket are all playing at some point this weekend, but we have not matched any of them to a day, so do not plan Saturday around a name from us. Check the day's schedule in KQED's guide or the festival's own, choose two sets you both want to see, and spend the rest of the day moving between stages. The six stages are spread across three meadows, so pick your two sets with the walk between them in mind; the festival map in KQED's guide shows which stage is where.
  3. 6:51 PM Sunset, with the last sets still going — Sunset on Saturday Oct 3 is 6:51 PM, from timeanddate's October table for San Francisco. Music runs until 7, so the last nine minutes of sets and the rest of the dusk happen while you are still in the meadow. The western end of the park is the side that fogs over first, so this is clear light only if the sky is clear. Leave at 7 with everyone else, or ten minutes before if you want a seat on the bus.
  4. 7:45 PM Dinner at The Richmond, 615 Balboa St — Saturday dinner is 6 to 11 PM according to its listing as shown in search results. Confirm when you book, on OpenTable or by phone at (415) 379-8988. It serves a short seasonal Californian menu. From Fulton and 30th it is about 1.8 miles east, between 7th and 8th Ave. The 5 Fulton runs east along the park's north edge, so ride to 8th Ave and walk two blocks north to Balboa. A 7:45 booking gives you 45 minutes to get out of a festival crowd, which is not too much. Book before Saturday.

Why it lands: A free festival is easy to say yes to. There is no ticket to coordinate, and if the day isn't working, nobody has wasted money. This one also has a built-in shape: get there late morning, pick two sets together, wander between six stages, and the day ends at 7 on its own. After eight hours outside, a booked table across town is something to look forward to.

Weather backup: If Saturday is gone, Sunday Oct 4 has the same 9 AM gates and 7 PM finish, and Friday's gates open at 11. Sunday's sunset is about two minutes earlier. If you can't get a 7:45 table at The Richmond, book a later one: Saturday dinner runs to 11. The Castro play below is the other way to spend Sunday.

Sunday the 4th: the 52nd Castro Street Fair, then Octo Octa at the Castro Theatre

Three sources carry the date and hours: the fair's own site, SFMTA's travel advisory and Funcheap. Expect street closures around Castro and Market, and come by Muni Metro to Castro Station rather than by car. Arriving at 2 gives you three and a half hours before the next stop. The Castro Art Mart is also listed for Sunday, 2 to 8 PM, on Noe St between Market and Beaver, one block east. We saw it only in listings, not on its organizer's page, so walk over if it is there and do not plan around it.
  2. 5:30 PM Octo Octa, the Castro Street Fair after-party, Castro Theatre, 429 Castro St — Sunday Oct 4: doors at 5:30, show at 6, all ages. Tickets start at about $35 on the theatre's own page, which is the place to buy them. The fair closes at 6 and the theatre is one block from Castro and Market, so you leave the fair half an hour early and walk in at doors. Buy before Sunday. Both of our sources trace back to the same promoter, which is why we link the venue rather than either listing.

Why it lands: The street fair gives you hours of easy company with plenty to look at, and you don't have to settle on a plan. The after-party gives the day an ending you both agreed to in advance: at 5:30 you walk one block and go inside. The whole day costs about $90 for two if you put the donation in the jar.

Weather backup: If Sunday is gone, the Castro Art Walk on Friday Oct 2, 5 to 8 PM, is free and walks the same few blocks. It is on the radar below. If the Octo Octa tickets sell out, stay at the fair until it closes at 6 and eat on Castro St; Hardly Strictly also runs until 7 that day across town.

Saturday the 10th: the Fleet Week air show from Marina Green, then dinner on Green Street

  1. 11:00 AM Stake out grass on Marina Green — Saturday Oct 10. The air show runs from noon to 4 PM on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct 9 to 11, and the Blue Angels headline it. Four sources carry the dates and hours: Fleet Week's own calendar, ABC7, Funcheap and SFMTA. Marina Green is one of the standard viewing spots, which is why you should arrive an hour before the show starts rather than at noon. Bring a blanket, layers and water. Check the Fleet Week calendar that morning (see the shutdown note at the top).
  2. 12:00–4:00 PM The air show, overhead — Four hours, free, and you do not need all of them. We have not seen a minute-by-minute order of performers, so we are not telling you when the Blue Angels fly. If you leave early you might miss them, which is the honest cost of beating the crowd out. The Parade of Ships was on Friday the 9th at 11 AM, if you came for the ships.
  3. 5:30 PM Dinner at Equal Parts, 478 Green St, North Beach — Saturday hours are 11 AM to 2 AM: brunch until 2:30, dinner 4 to 9:30, late-night menu 10 to 11:30. We checked these before building the step. New American food and a cocktail bar, in the old Spaghetti Factory building between Grant and Kearny. Book on its site or OpenTable, or sit at the bar as a walk-in. From Marina Green it is about two miles. Walk east along the water past Fort Mason and Aquatic Park, then up Columbus, which takes about 45 minutes. Or take the 30 Stockton from Chestnut St, a few blocks south of the Green, which runs to North Beach. Expect it to be full right after the show. Sunset that evening is 6:40 PM.

Why it lands: An air show is a good first-hours date: you're side by side, looking up at something loud and impressive, and the gaps between passes leave room to talk. The walk to North Beach afterward gets you out of the crowd and gives you a stretch to talk properly. The bar that opens until 2 means the evening can be as long as you both want.

Weather backup: The air show also runs Friday and Sunday, noon to 4. Sunday has a catch: the Italian Heritage Parade starts in North Beach at 12:30, so you will be choosing between the parade and the first half of the air show (it is on the radar below). Fleet Fest at Pier 27 is free, 9 to 5, Saturday and Sunday. If the crowd on the Green is too much, it is a morning alternative on the other side of the northern waterfront.
